RALEIGH – On Wednesday, former Democratic Congressman Wiley Nickel officially launched his campaign for US Senate in battleground North Carolina, mounting a challenge to Republican Senator Thom Tillis.
“When I was 18, I lost my father to cancer. He was a farmer, and he taught me the value of hard work. He made me want to roll up my sleeves to help people. That led me to work for President Barack Obama during some of his toughest battles with Republicans, and to fight for my neighbors in Congress before Republicans tried to get rid of me,” said Wiley Nickel. “Well, that work is nowhere near done. I’m running for the US Senate because it’s time for a new generation of leaders in Washington with a fresh vision and a whole lot of fight in them.”
“Donald Trump is shredding our constitution and billionaires are cutting Medicare, dismantling FEMA, and taking a sledgehammer to our education system. It’s happening right now, and Thom Tillis is cheering them on. North Carolinians are struggling with rising costs, low wages, and a Senator who cares more about his own career than helping them. I can’t sit on the sidelines and watch it happen.” said Nickel.
After serving two terms in the North Carolina State Senate, Nickel ran for Congress in 2022 and defeated his opponent in one of the most closely watched battleground races in the country. He did not seek reelection to the US House after district lines were redrawn in 2023.
Nickel didn’t go out quietly. He traveled the state raising over $550,000 to help support Democratic candidates up and down the ballot in 2024.
Nickel lives in Cary, with his wife and two young children.
