Harnett County Teacher Jailed On Multiple Charges

HARNETT COUNTY, N.C. — A Harnett County school teacher was arrested Thursday following an investigation into illegal substances on campus, according to the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office.

Jocelyn Lee McArthur, 33, is charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell or deliver on or near a school, possession of drug paraphernalia, simple possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance and possession of a weapon on educational property (not a gun).

Authorities said the investigation began March 26 after the sheriff’s office received information that a teacher at Overhills High School was in possession of an illegal substance while on campus.

Deputies charged McArthur in connection with the incident. Officials did not immediately release details about the types of substance involved or the nature of the weapon.

McArthur is being held at the Harnett County Detention Center under a $102,000 secured bond.

Sheriff Wayne Coats said the investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be filed.

    • She probably will be, but don’t you think teachers should be paid more so they don’t need other means of income? I don’t disagree, she absolutely should not be selling weed at a high school, or her place of employment. Especially if they are the same place. But why do you suppose she was doing this? We should always ask more questions. We can’t stop something if we don’t know why its happening.

      • The “Why” is not mysterious. It’s greed. There is NO justification for selling drugs at your place of employment, especially if it’s a school. NO employer would or should tolerate this f.

Teachers get good pay for 8-9 months of work.

        • I don’t know where you get your information from about teacher pay but it isn’t enough to make ends meet. Not only that the children nowadays are raised way different than back in the day. Not sure if you’re aware of this but starting in childcare teachers are not allowed to even say no to children. It’s all about redirect. Teachers aren’t allowed to do any form of punishment AT ALL!!! Basically the children get to tell the adults what they are going to do and there’s nothing the teacher can do about it. If it’s all about redirect in childcare and elementary school and letting the children tell the adults what to do and there’s no discipline at home because parents are too busy and place their children in front of the TV, tablet, computer, phone, ect., what discipline do these children get. So children act out, wanting attention and learn at an early age that when they act negatively 9 times out of 10 that’s when the parents pay them attention. Not in a positive way either. They may yell, tell them to go play somewhere else because the parents are on the phone or whatnot. But the child still got a rise from their parent. Then they go to school with this same mind set. Children are not only cruel to other children but to teachers as well. The older they get the meaner and mouther they can be. Not only that how many high school shootings have there been? How many did teachers do? My point is teachers definitely don’t get paid enough to deal with the everyday BS that children throw at them. I’m not
saying what she did was right, she shouldn’t had drugs at school period! Think about it though maybe a student threatened her because they seen her outside of school smoking the reason for the weapon and the drugs. That brings me to my next point “WHY” is mysterious!

  1. School personnel should have to dress and look professional instead of like the kids, they do not set good examples and that is the fault of our system trying to get positions filled. Morals are out of the window. Make teachers dress and act like teachers instead of friends, children are there to learn and if there are problems then the correct personnel needs to get off their buns and handle it. We have to start somewhere. Teachers also need to be held accountable for teaching the kids. This is my personal opinion and I don’t need any ugly remarks .

    • Lol, what, Gail? Are you really basing everything you said regarding their appearance off this teachers mugshot? I would love to see yours…

    • Teachers would “dress professionally” if they were treated and compensated professionally, but go off, sis.

    • I agree with you regarding morals. I’d add discipline to that as well. However, most of the behavioral issues with students start at home. Parents need to be held accountable as well-not just the teachers. I taught History and I enjoyed it. What ruined it for me was the utter lack of discipline. The teacher in this article screwed up-big time and needs to face the consequences. However, I worked with some outstanding teachers that were fighting a battle on three fronts: the classroom with the troublemakers, the parents who believed that little Johnny was an absolute angel, when in fact, he was a demon, and an administration that lacked the balls to do anything but throw the teacher under the bus.

      • A lack of discipline and accountability is the biggest issue in public schools right now. Administrators don’t do anything about terrible behaviors – some that are threatening to teachers and classmates – because the county wants lower discipline numbers. The county wants lower discipline numbers because they want people to enroll in their schools and the state wants lower discipline numbers. Sometimes administrators won’t do anything to protect students and teachers because they don’t want to deal with parents or because the student is popular or comes from a popular family.

  2. This should serve as a reminder that NC is the ONLY state in the USA that does not have a budget because GOP lawmakers refuse to work. If this teacher and so many others could actually get paid, this likely would not be an issue. Also, I see THC products advertised everywhere in our area. There are billboards on Hwy 70 advertising businesses that sell THC products. Why is this a big deal? Because our public hates teachers.

  3. Her arrest warrant reads she was in possession of marijuana and hash. Now i understand we have laws but it’s legal in other states.
