Hispanic Heritage Month Event

SMITHFIELD – The Johnston County Museum will be hosting a special Hispanic Heritage Month event on Saturday, October 14, at 11 am, highlighting the book, Moments, Memories and Men: An Immigrant’s Trigenerational Historical Reminiscences of Pre-Castro Cuba, Fleeing to America, and Serving Its Military for Forty-One Years (1881-2021). Author Pascual Goicoechea will be on hand to talk about his book and sign copies.
“We are excited about this opportunity to hear some of Pascual’s story and would like to encourage other Latino citizens in our county to share theirs,” said Todd Johnson, Executive Director of the Johnston County Heritage Center and Museum.

Goicoechea is a native of Cuba. He is a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army. After retiring from active duty in 2010 he moved to Clayton. He currently serves as a member of the Johnston County Heritage Commission.
There will be a brief question and answer segment, as well as an opportunity for participants to explore current exhibits. Participants will be encouraged to share their life stories and family histories through writing or by scheduling a recorded oral history interview.
No reservations are necessary. The Johnston County Museum, located at 329 E. Market Street, Smithfield, is open to the public free of admission charge, Monday-Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm. For more information, call 919-938-5912 or visit the Heritage Center’s website, www.jcheritagecenter.org.
