Ice Pop With A Cop: Police Officer Patrolling Neighborhoods Looking To Keep Citizens Cool

Smithfield Police Officer Julie Carroll gives children an Ice Pop on a hot July afternoon.

SMITHFIELD – Earlier this month, when heat index values topped out over 100 degrees, Smithfield Police Officer Julie Carroll came up with an idea.  While on routine patrol, Officer Carroll saw children playing outdoors, senior citizens walking in the heat, and others having to work in the sweltering temperatures. She wanted to do something to give them a little relief from the heat, while having a positive interaction with residents.

Office Carroll came up with the idea of “Ice Pop with a Cop.” She purchased ice pops and bottled water and placed them in a cooler in her cruiser. While on patrol, if Officer Carroll sees someone in the heat who looks like they need to a little break and to cool down, she stops and offers them an ice pop or bottled water.

Interim Police Chief James Grady said, “It’s extremely important that we stay connected with our community. We are here to help them. And it’s important to stay cool on hot summer days.  We don’t want anyone to overheat. We will continue Ice Pop with a Cop throughout the summer when (Officer Carroll) is working. There is not a set day or time, depending on her schedule.”

Town Manager Mike Scott said, “This idea is a great way to help out our community, keep our residents safe in this high heat, and go that extra mile for our citizens. Kudos to the police department for reaching out to our residents in this way. A great example of one more positive neighborhood initiative for our community.”

Carroll is a Community Police Officer on the Smithfield police force. It is part of the federal government’s 21st Century Policing initiative and the police department’s accreditation recommendations.
