James Ayers Named New Kenly Police Chief

KENLY – The Town of Kenly has announced the hiring of James Ayers as chief of police.

Chief Ayers started his career in 1993 as a deputy with the Greene County Sheriff’s Office. In 2007 he became an investigator with the NC Department of Insurance. After his retirement from the state, he served as police chief in Enfield, NC.

“I am humbled and honored to be entrusted by the town council and town manger to serve as Kenly’s Police Chief. I am also excited for this opportunity to serve the Friendly Kenly Community,” Chief Ayers said. “I am looking forward to rebuilding the Kenly Police Department with emphasis on community policing, providing excellent customer service and addressing community needs. It is my belief that policing is to work in conjunction with its community. Together, we can solve problems and make things better. We are all guardians to our community. In our journey together, lets us continue to make Kenly a safe place to live, work and raise a family.”

Chief Ayers earned his M.A. in Adult Education from Central Michigan University and B.S. in Organization Management from Saint Pauls’ College. He has an advanced certificate in law enforcement from the State of North Carolina, is a 2019 graduate of the Administrative Office Management Program and a 2018 graduate of the FBI’s Law Enforcement Executive Development Association Program. In 2005, James completed 200 hours of Senior Level Management Training from Coastal Plain Law Enforcement Management Institute. He also holds a specialized instructor certification with North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission, according to a news release from the Town of Kenly.
