Johnston Deputies Seek Tips In Church Theft Case

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Authorities are investigating a break-in at a church just outside Smithfield where musical equipment was reported stolen.

The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said the incident at Wesley Chapel AME Church was discovered Tuesday, March 31 around 12:27 p.m.

A church member told deputies they passed by the property around 11 a.m. and found everything secure. When they returned about an hour later, they noticed a storage building door open and stopped to check.

A door hinge had been damaged to gain entry. About $800 worth of musical instruments was reported missing.
