Letter To The Editor: Save Our Historic Fremont School

Fremont Elementary School has been a part of our community’s story for more than a century. Built in 1923 through the dedication and generosity of Fremont’s citizens, the school has educated generations of children and served as a gathering place for families and neighbors alike.

Today, we have an opportunity to preserve this important historic landmark while giving it new life. Rather than allowing the building to sit unused or deteriorate, the Town of Fremont and a local nonprofit group, Fremont Forward, have proposed a vision to repurpose the school as a community center. Such a center could provide space for after-school programs, tutoring, youth activities, cultural events, and community meetings.

Many communities across North Carolina have successfully transformed historic schools into vibrant community spaces. Fremont has the same opportunity.

I respectfully encourage the Wayne County Board of Education to work with the Town of Fremont to preserve this historic property so it can continue serving the people of Wayne County.

Fremont Elementary is more than a building. It represents our history, our community spirit, and our hope for the future.
