FOUR OAKS – The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office is treating the death of a 21 year-old man found shot to death behind a home today (Friday) as a homicide.
The shooting was reported at 12:14PM at 6350-A Devil’s Racetrack Road south of Four Oaks.
Chief Deputy Bengie Gaddis said officers responded to a report of a person being shot. When they arrived, deputies found 21 year-old Jacob Whaley of Strickland’s Crossroads Road, Four Oaks in the back yard dead from an apparent gunshot wound.
As officers were attempting to get information on the person who shot Whaley, the suspect identified as 37 year-old Adam Clayton Stewart of Four Oaks, called deputies and surrendered at a nearby home without further incident.
Gaddis said the suspect and victim knew one another. Gaddis said deputies are not searching for any other suspects.
Adam Stewart was charged by detectives with the murder of Jacob Whaley and confined this afternoon in the Johnston County Jail without bond.
A possible motive has not been disclosed.
