More Than a Funeral Home—Cromartie-Miller Was a Cornerstone Of Dunn
DUNN – After 119 years of dedicated service, Cromartie-Miller Funerals and Cremations will conclude its remarkable chapter in Dunn on December 1, 2025. While the doors of the historic funeral home will close, the legacy of care, compassion, and community support it leaves behind will continue to resonate throughout Harnett County and beyond.
“After more than a century of service to families in Dunn, Cromartie-Miller Funerals and Cremations will close its doors effective Dec. 1, 2025,” confirmed Christopher James, external communications specialist for Service Corporation International (SCI), the parent company.
Founded in 1906 by Raymond Cromartie Sr., the business began humbly above Cromartie Hardware Store on Broad Street. From those early days, the funeral home earned the trust of local families through kindness, dignity, and professionalism.
Following the founder’s passing, Raymond Cromartie Jr. continued the mission, relocating the business to Wilson Avenue and Edgerton Street to better serve the growing community. In the late 1960s, Cromartie Funeral Home found its lasting home at the corner of Cumberland Street and Layton Avenue—occupying a historic building that once housed First Presbyterian Church of Dunn and Cape Fear Christian Academy.
In 1989, the next era began when Ricky Miller purchased the business, forming Cromartie-Miller Funerals and Cremations. Under his leadership, the funeral home became part of the Dignity Memorial network, connecting Dunn families with a broader community of caring professionals while maintaining the same hometown warmth and attention to detail.
Over the decades, Cromartie-Miller has stood beside thousands of local families, offering comfort in times of loss and guidance through life’s most tender moments. From generations of the Cromartie family to the dedicated staff who followed, their shared commitment to service has been an enduring hallmark of the Dunn community.
SCI has assured that all prearranged funeral contracts with Cromartie-Miller will continue to be honored through Reeves Funeral Home in Hope Mills or any other Dignity Memorial provider.
“We look forward to continuing to provide families with the quality care, integrity, and service they have come to expect from our locations as Dignity Memorial providers,” James said.
Though the building will close, the spirit of Cromartie-Miller’s service will live on—in the countless lives they touched, the families they comforted, and the strong sense of community they helped nurture for more than a century.
As Dunn says farewell to one of its most enduring institutions, it also celebrates 119 years of compassion, professionalism, and heartfelt service—a legacy that will forever be part of the town’s history.

My whole family on my dad’s side except for my dad was handled by this funeral home starting in 1980. There is no better place, thanks for all your years of serving.
