Motorcyclist Fatally Shot By Sampson County Deputy

CLINTON – A motorcyclist was shot and killed at the end of a pursuit Saturday morning. The incident started around 9:30am when a Sampson County deputy sheriff attempted to stop the operator of a motorcycle, on US 421 north of Clinton, for a registration violation. The driver refused to pull over.

During the chase, deputies said they noticed the male operator had a firearm on his side. The pursuit continued onto several secondary roads and back to US 421. As the motorcycle approached Kitty Fork Road, the motorcyclist lost control and crashed.

Following the crash authorities say the motorcycle operator then drew his weapon, and a deputy fired their service weapon striking the suspect.

Deputies immediately begin administering first aid until EMS personnel arrived. The man was transported to Sampson Regional Medical Center where he later died. His name was not immediately released.

No deputies were injured.

The incident is being investigated by the NC State Bureau of Investigation, which is standard procedure in an officer involved shooting.

  1. Thank God no Deputies were injured. The suspect on the motorcycle got justice served. I pray for the Deputy who shot him to understand it was him or the suspect and he had no other choice but to fire so he could go home to his family after his shift. Good job Deputy and thank you and all LEOs for protecting us.

  2. Interesting the headline didn’t include “armed motorcyclist refuses to stop and runs away from police for a lawful traffic stop then draws his gun and points at sheriff, is shot”. Even joco report loves to sensationalize a headline to make police look like the bad guy. It will be interesting to see if they even allow this post.

    • What is inaccurate about the headline? The motorcyclist was shot. Who shot him? The police. Not seeing the issue here.

      • It’s not what’s in the headline it’s what was left out. A: he was fleeing the police B: he had a firearm and most importantly C: he pointed the gun at the deputy. He wasn’t a “motorcyclist” he was someone running from the law on s as motorcycle and you darn well know the difference.

        • Sorry, but he was still a motorcyclist. You wouldn’t say the driver of a car isn’t a “driver” just because they’re using a car to run from police.

It’s a headline. It’s just a short phrase to describe the article. Adding all sorts of details completely defeats the point of having a headline. You seem smart enough to understand that.

          • I agree. If you are going to put the narrative in the headline then what is the point of the article. The headline is to catch your attention. Try reading the article to get the full details.

  3. Proper headline: armed man on motorcycle fleeing sheriff shot in Harnett county. Main facts in headline, detail in story.
