King Godwin

    Mr. King Godwin, age 85, passed away on January 27, 2023 at his home in Selma. Born in Johnston County on September 1, 1937, he was the son of the late Wallace Godwin and Annabella King Godwin.

    Mr. King was a member of Bethel AME Church in Selma. He was heavily involved in the International Free and Accepted Modern Masons and O.E.S. Saint James #082 in Selma, as well as the Community Male Chorus. Mr. King was known as a master mechanic who could fix just about anything. He was also known for his sweet potato pies. Mr. King was the best father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend that anyone could have, who loved his family unconditionally, but especially his children.

    Mr. King was employed at Hinnant Construction Company for over 40 years. King began working for Mr. Tom Hinnant as just an employee but soon became family. He was considered a son by Mr. and Mrs. Hinnant and like a brother to their children, especially Ann Williams. During the decades of work, King was involved in many, many projects, including the building of many of the First Citizens banks in eastern North Carolina, many of the houses in South Smithfield, a number of post offices, school buildings, federal work on military bases, the development of several subdivisions in Selma and Smithfield, and even additional work in South Carolina. Through the years, King became the “go to” guy. No matter what was needed or how complex it was, the phrase, “Call King” was often part of the company’s daily life.

    Funeral services will be held at Shiloh Christian Church in Smithfield on Thursday, February 2, 2023 at 1:00 pm. Family and friends may come and pay respects to King from 12-1:00 pm, just prior to the service.

    In addition to his parents, Mr. King is preceded in death by his wife, Eva Mae Mickens Godwin, daughter Tychinna Bell; siblings James, Willie, Ernest, Billy Clifton, Ida Mae and Betsy.

    He is survived by daughters Vanessa Pettiway (Onzell), Brenda Mickens, Avis Regina Godwin, Betsy Tamica Blackwell (Gerald),Tavia Mickens; sons – King Rodney Godwin (Trina), Tarvaris Mickens (Laura), Taquan Mickens, Tion Mickens; sisters – Hazel, Fairy, Carolyn and Rolinda Godwin; brothers, Wallace Godwin, Calvin Godwin and Robert Godwin; sisters-in-law –Vernice, Helen Godwin, Josephine Brooks, Luvearn Olawuni (Winferd), Mary Gully (Jerry); brother-in-law – Thurman Mickens (Ruby); 24 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren but to many of the grands and great grands, he was considered DADDY. Special friends – Greg Rice, Hubert Bird & Tim Lyons, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and Friends.
