Mary Lou Attayek

    Mary Lou Abdalla Attayek, age 93, passed away early Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at SECU Hospice House in Smithfield. Born April 19, 1929 in Rockingham County, she was the daughter of Louis and Maggie Thomas Abdalla. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Attayek and son-in-law, Albert Carr.

    Mary Lou was a lifelong member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Smithfield. She and her mother ran two retail businesses in Selma long before it was commonplace for women to run businesses, followed by a decades-long career as a library assistant at Selma Elementary School. She loved chocolate, peppermint, Pepsi and Selma. Her family would like to thank Selma for loving her back.

    Funeral mass will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 14, 2022 in St. Ann Catholic Church on Hwy 70 between Smithfield and Clayton. Burial will follow in Selma Memorial Gardens. The family is acutely Covid-aware and requests masks and distance.

    Surviving are her son, Ned Attayek and wife Debbie of Smithfield; daughters, Ann Attayek Carr of Raleigh, Louise Deaton and husband Bob of Morrisville, and Lynn Ball and husband Fred of Saratoga, CA; grandchildren, Tad Deaton and wife Caroline, Nicholas Deaton and wife Christion, Mary Elizabeth Rives and husband Jefferson, Maggie Ball, Aaron Ball, and Elizabeth Ball; and great grandchildren, Hill Rives, George Rives, Jack Rives, Brody Deaton, Avery Deaton and Haddie Deaton.

    In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to My Kid’s Club, 311 West Richardson Street, Selma, NC 27576.
