    CHESAPEAKE – Melvin Brooks Joyner, 88, of the 2100 block of Isabella Dr. passed away on Sunday, June 12, 2022. He was born on September 19, 1933 in Johnston County, NC to the late Cooley and Lola Joyner; and was a proud U.S. Army veteran. Melvin retired as an inside machinist from Shop#31 at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth. He was a member of Jackson Memorial Baptist Church; and was past master of Lake Drummond Masonic Lodge #178 and Past Patron of Driver #149 Order of the Eastern Star.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Kathlene Howell, Loreece Radford, Evelyn Jones, Annie Ruth Woodard, and Jeane Walker.

    He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Emmalene S. Joyner; his daughter, Melinda Joyner Smith; his son, Kelvin “Brooks” Joyner and wife Maryann; a sister, Janice Parker; a brother, Harold C. Joyner and his wife Frankie; three grandchildren, Jessica, Ashley and Jessica; a great grandson, Zech; and a host of extended family and friends.

    A graveside service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, June 17, 2022 at Rains Crossroads Cemetery, Kenly, NC. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel assisted the family with arrangements.
