Quinton King Claudius Havard Wall (a.k.a.”Q.K.”) was born on a farm near Selma, North Carolina on January 28, 1929. He was the son of Jesse Lessel Wall and Velma Campbell Wall He was married to Thelma Watkins Wall for sixty-four years. Two daughters were born to this union, Sylvia Anjanette Wall and Loretta Noreen Wall. Included in the circle of bereaved family members are Reginald Keith Wall and Beverly Ann Hagins.
Quinton Wall graduated from Johnston County Training School in Smithfield and attended North Carolina College (North Carolina Central University). At NCCU, he earned the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees. He did further study at Daemen College, Buffalo, New York and Saint Augustine’s College, Raleigh, North Carolina.
Quinton Wall served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War in which he was awarded the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars and the United Nations Service Medal.
After operating a grocery store for two years and teaching at Barnes Business School, Q.K. accepted a high school teaching position at his Alma Mater. He was a “powerhouse” of energy which he used generously in his administrative career, in his church and in the community. Throughout his career as an educator, he was continually placed in leadership positions: Principal of South Campus Elementary School; Assistant Principal of Smithfield-Selma Senior High School, Principal of Harrison Junior High School; Assistant Superintendent and Interim-Superintendent of Johnston County Schools. After retirement, Quinton Wall served on the Johnston Board of Education. He was appointed to the Johnston County Health Board of Commissioners on which he served for eighteen years.
Mr. Wall was the first Black to be elected President of a Kiwanis Club in the Carolinas, leading the Selma Kiwanis club. He served eight years on the Governor’s Advisory Council on Aging; as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Johnston-Harnett-Lee Community Action; member of the Johnston County Citizens Association; Life Member of the NAACP; Life Member of the North Carolina Central University Alumni Association; Life member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and member of the Special Olympics North Carolina Sports Development team for Roller Skating. He was Past Potentate of Arabian Shrine Temple #42, New Bern, North Carolina, and a member of the Rough Ashler Lodge #52, Selma, North Carolina.
Among his many honors are: the naming of the South Campus Community Schools gymnasium in his honor; designated a “Living Legend of Johnston County” by the Johnston County Heritage Commission; the first Black person to be named “Citizen of the Year” by the Smithfield-Selma Chamber of Commerce; the North Carolina Distinguished Service Award by the Exceptional Children’s Division and Distinguished Service Award; Administrator of the Year by the Johnston County and District 3 Association of Educational Office Personnel. Quinton Wall received the Special Olympics National President’s Award by the Johnston County Citizens Association and the Living Legend Award given by the Johnston County Board of Education.
Mr. Wall joined First Missionary Baptist Church in 1940 at the age of eleven where he remained a dedicated member. He also enjoyed playing bridge, roller skating, public speaking, and traveling.
