Fayetteville – Eileen Franzel “Gertie” Joyner, age 97, died Saturday night in the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield.
Born September 19, 1921 in New York City, NY, she was a daughter of the late Horst Robert and Agnes Marie Edwards Franzel and was the widow of Clinton Cotton Joyner.
A US Army nurse, she met and married her husband while they were both stationed in Washington state, during WWII. Eileen and Clint raised their three sons in Greenville. In her fifth decade of life Eileen decided it was time to get her first driver’s license!
Additionally Mrs. Joyner enrolled at ECU and received her BS in Nursing and later was awarded her MA in Adult Education from NCSU. She taught nursing at Highsmith-Rainey Hospital and later at Fayetteville Technical Community College until her retirement. Gertie attended the Catholic Church at Fort Bragg for many years.
A graveside service, with military honors, will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 31, 2019 in the Fayetteville Memorial Cemetery in Fayetteville with the Father Peter Grace officiating.
Surviving are her sons, Clint Joyner and wife Kay of Smithfield, Daniel Joyner and wife Marsha of Wendell and Neil Joyner and wife Melissa of Fayetteville and a sister, Ursula Pardo of San Diego, CA.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the SECU Hospice House, P. O. Box 1376, Smithfield, NC 27577.
