Juanita Shearin “Granny” McElroy

    Smithfield- Juanita Shearin “Granny” McElroy, age 92, died early Thursday morning, July 23, 2020 at her home. Born August 14, 1927 in Halifax County she was the daughter of the late Robert Ray and Pauline Herrin Shearin. She was preceded in death by her husband, William E. McElroy; and daughter, Mary Alice Myrick. Juanita, or Granny, as she was affectionately called by most, was a member of Smithfield Free Will Baptist Church. Juanita was one of the first general office employees at Field Crest Mills in Smithfield in the early 1960s. She later worked as a bookkeeper at Fussell’s Cabinet Shop in Pine Level. Because of her love of green plants and flowers she then worked at Sunshine Gardens in Smithfield and eventually retired from Lowe’s Home Improvement in 2005.

    Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Monday, July 27, 2020 in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home with Rev. Jason Hurt officiating. Burial will follow in Selma Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. Monday just prior to the service.

    Surviving are her son, Robert Myrick and wife Mary Lynn of North Myrtle Beach, SC; daughter, Joy McElroy of Smithfield; grandchildren, Mattie Creech Smith and husband Joe, and Cathlyn Creech; great grandson, Levi Barrett Smith; “adopted” children, Wendy Barnes Targos and Barry Barnes; and “adopted” grandchildren, Dakota Cantrell, Mindy Davis, Kyndall Yelverton, Karlie Creech, Kaylyn Boswell, Ryan Linder and Luke Targos.
