Pedestrian Struck By Log Truck

A pedestrian was run over by a log truck Monday afternoon on Thunder Road just off Highway 301 North of Four Oaks.

Around 1:20pm a passing motorist discovered a man lying in the roadway on Thunder Road about 100 yards off Highway 301.  Emergency crews arrived on the scene and determined the man had been run over by a vehicle.  The driver and vehicle that struck the pedestrian was not on the scene.

Police Chief Stephen Anderson said the victim, who is from Durham, was rushed by Four Oaks EMS to WakeMed with unknown injuries.

A short time after the accident, the driver of the tractor trailer contacted Four Oaks Police and met with officers.  Chief Anderson said the driver was traveling on Thunder Road when the pedestrian jumped onto the side of the truck as if he may have wanted to get inside the truck cab.  The driver said the pedestrian slipped and fell. The driver said he was unaware the rear tire of his log truck ran over the pedestrian.

Chief Anderson said the driver was afraid the victim may have been trying to rob him, and that’s why he didn’t stop at the scene. There was no evidence the pedestrian was trying to rob the driver, however Chief Anderson said alcohol may have played a factor as to why the pedestrian jumped onto the moving truck.

No charges will be filed against the driver of the log truck.  The name of the pedestrian has not been released.

Four Oaks Police, Four Oaks EMS, Johnston County EMS, and the Four Oaks Fire Department responded to the scene.
