Peyton Herring Earns Spot In UNC Morehead-Cain Class of 2030

NEWTON GROVE, N.C. — Whether on the volleyball court, in a classroom leadership role, or volunteering in her community, Peyton Rose Herring has spent her high school years balancing academics, athletics, and service.
That combination has now earned her a place in one of the nation’s most competitive scholarship programs.
Herring, a senior at Midway High School in Newton Grove, has been selected as a Morehead-Cain Scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as part of the Class of 2030.
At Midway High, Herring serves as a leader in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has captained the school’s varsity volleyball, basketball, and softball teams. She also represents Sampson County Schools on its strategic planning committee, contributing student input on district-wide decisions.
Beyond school, Herring is active in her church and local community. She tutors students of varying abilities, co-leads a Bible study group for teenage girls, and volunteers regularly with church programs.
Herring plans to attend UNC-Chapel Hill, where she intends to study biomedical engineering and English.
The Morehead-Cain Scholarship provides full financial support for undergraduate study at UNC, along with funding for summer enrichment experiences that include internships, research opportunities, and global travel. Scholars also join a long-standing network of alumni across the world.
Herring is the daughter of Rosemary Herring of Dunn and the late Carl Herring.
