Princeton Community Celebrates Retirement Of Veteran Firefighter Butch Holland

PRINCETON, N.C. — Longtime firefighter James “Butch” Holland was honored during a retirement ceremony attended by a large crowd of firefighters, public officials, family members and friends celebrating his decades of service to the Princeton community.
The May 17 ceremony recognized Holland’s more than 40 years in the fire service, including 36 years serving the Princeton area.

Current and former firefighters shared stories from Holland’s career, many recalling the early days of volunteer firefighting when equipment, training and fire suppression techniques were far different from today.
Several speakers reflected on Holland’s dedication to the department and the community, while also sharing humorous memories from years spent responding to emergency calls together.

Among the honors presented was “The Order of the Guardian,” awarded by North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey.
The award is considered the highest and most prestigious honor presented by the North Carolina Department of Insurance and the Office of the State Fire Marshal. It is reserved for individuals who have dedicated 30 to 40 years or more to serving citizens across the state through the fire service.

Causey praised Holland’s commitment and years of service during the presentation.
Despite formally retiring, Holland made clear he still plans to remain close to the department.

“I’ll be down at the station,” Holland told the crowd.
The ceremony concluded with applause and congratulations from fellow firefighters and community members who thanked Holland for his longtime service and leadership in Princeton.
