Smoke Alarms Credited For Helping Family Escape House Fire

JOHNSTON COUNTY – The Johnston County Fire Marshal’s Office said working smoke alarms alerted a family to an early-morning house fire, allowing them to escape without any injuries.

Around 1:33am today (Friday), the Johnston County 911 Center received a call reporting a residential house fire on Willis Road, Garner, off Cornwallis Road.

Smoke alarms awakened the family, who were able to make it outside. A dog did perish as a result of the fire.

Three people living at the address were displaced. The Red Cross is providing them with assistance.

Fire investigators determined the blaze started under an attached shelter. The exact cause has not been determined.

County Fire Marshal Ryan Parker encourages everyone to test and maintain their smoke alarms.

The 50/210, Cleveland, West Johnston, and Garner Fire Departments responded.
