SUV Damaged By Open Manhole

SMITHFIELD – A manhole cover missing from a Smithfield street damaged a vehicle.

Around 9:28pm Wednesday, a Lumberton woman was driving her 2023 Chevrolet SUV southbound on South Third Street near E. Davis Street when the left rear tire hit the manhole. Police said the manhole had no cover on it.

The driver was traveling at approximately 25 mph in a 25 mph zone at the time of the accident.

The vehicle sustained approximately $1,000 in damage. The SUV was not driveable and had to be towed from the scene.

The driver was not injured.

  1. Where could the manhole cover have gone. Thank God no one was injured and that a child or anyone for that matter did not fall into the hole.

  2. Why wasn’t it covered? I mean these streets are a mess as it is not just 3rd . What if a child had been out there fell in . I have worked in Smithfield for years streets are terrible.
