West Smithfield Elementary Receives North Carolina State Flag

Students at West Smithfield Elementary participated in a live civics lesson when North Carolina House Representative Donna White presented a North Carolina state flag to the school on Thursday.

The flag the students and staff received had previously flown over the State Capitol and was specially approved for presentation to the school by North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, according to Rep. White, who formerly served on the Johnston County Board of Education.

West Smithfield Elementary Principal Sharon Bryant, students, and staff also welcomed the Smithfield-Selma High JROTC, which officially opened the ceremony.

White shared the historical significance of presenting the flag on Dec. 7th which was also  National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. White said the day also had special meaning to her, because it was her mother’s birthday.

The high school’s chorus ensemble led the attendees in the singing of the National Anthem. Girl Scout Troop 1607 of Four Oaks hoisted the American and North Carolina flags to half-staff in memory of Pearl Harbor.
