CLAYTON – Two people were injured and traffic was diverted for hours around an accident scene just before 5:00pm Friday. It happened at the intersection of US Highway 70 and Powhatan Road.
An eighteen wheeler was leaving the Speedway convenience store parking lot when it snagged low-hanging communication lines on a utility pole. The lines were ripped off two poles. At least two poles were broken bringing down other utility lines. One line fell across a portion of Highway 70 while another line dangled a couple of feet in the air across Powhatan Road.
A car turning from Highway 70 onto Powhatan Road struck the low-hanging line on Powhatan Road causing minor injuries to two occupants in the vehicle. Both occupants were transported by EMS to the hospital.
The Clayton Police Department and NCDOT diverted traffic. The Clayton Fire Department stood by at the scene. The State Highway Patrol investigated the mishap.
