WILSON’S MILLS – Construction will start this spring on upgrading a nearly 5-mile swath of U.S. 70 in Johnston County to interstate standards, which will improve safety and reduce traveling delays. The N.C. Department of Transportation awarded a $58.8 million contract last week to improve the four-lane route between U.S. 70 Business and the Neuse River.

The improvements will include: Construct interchanges at Swift Creek Road and at Wilson’s Mills Road;  Close road-level intersections and median openings; and Add service roads to provide new access to businesses and properties along U.S. 70.

Traffic signals now operate U.S. 70 at Swift Creek Road and at Wilson’s Mills Road, causing delays, especially during peak travel times. The interchanges will include bridges and ramps at these two locations, vastly improving travel time and reducing the risk of crashes.

NCDOT has a long-term plan to convert U.S. 70 between Raleigh and Morehead City into Interstate 42, which requires these kind of improvements.

“This is our first project in Division 4 upgrading this important corridor to bring the future I-42 into Eastern North Carolina,” said Melvin Mitchell, the area’s representative on the N.C. Board of Transportation. “It’s vital that we have a transportation network that keeps us competitive economically and plans for growth in our region.”

Highway Division 4 comprises Edgecombe, Halifax, Johnston, Nash, Wayne and Wilson counties.

To minimize traffic impacts, Wilson’s Mills Road will primarily remain open throughout construction, while Swift Creek Road will close for about one year.

Flatiron Constructors Inc. of Morrisville is scheduled to complete the project in the fall of 2024. People may view the design map of how the interchanges and improved highway will look, as well as find other details about the project, by visiting this NCDOT page.

  1. They’ve done so much to improve 70 to Morehead City already. Once it’s done, raise the speed limit to 90mph.
