Camp Courage Coming In June For Bereaved Children

The fourth “Camp Courage” will take place on Saturday, June 10th from 8:00am until 5:00pm at Camp Mary Atkinson, located 8589 NC Highway 42 near Selma.

Camp Courage is an annual bereavement camp for children ages 6 through 16 sponsored by Johnston Health. This event was the topic of “Johnston Health Talk” as Liz Thurston interviewed April Barbour-Matthews, a Social Worker and Bereavement Coordinator at SECU Hospice House in Smithfield.

(Left to right) Liz Thurston and April Barbour-Matthews discussed Camp Courage during a recent segment of Johnston Health Talk on WTSB Radio AM 1090 – FM 105.5. Camp Courage is scheduled for June 10th. Online registration continues until June 1st.

According to Ms. Barbour-Matthews, “many young people who experience the death of someone they love need a supportive and safe environment to share their feelings.” The one-day free camp offers expressive art, games, music, and other activities.

The staff and volunteers are made up of professionals such as social workers, bereavement counselors, chaplains, nurses, and volunteers who have training in working with children who have experienced loss.

To register someone for Camp Courage go to www.johnstonhealth.org/campcourage. Online registration closes June 1.
