Chilly Start: Frost Advisory In Effect Tuesday Morning

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Residents across Johnston County and surrounding areas should prepare for a chilly night, as a Frost Advisory remains in effect from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Forecasters say temperatures could drop to around 33 degrees overnight, creating conditions favorable for patchy frost — particularly in rural and low-lying areas.

The advisory includes Johnston County and neighboring counties such as Wake, Wilson, Nash, Harnett, and Sampson, impacting communities including Smithfield, Selma, Clayton, Benson, and Four Oaks.

The cold air arrives behind a passing cold front, with clearing skies and calm winds expected overnight. Those conditions will allow temperatures to fall quickly, increasing the likelihood of frost forming by early morning.

While widespread freezing temperatures are not expected in Johnston County, the brief drop near freezing could still damage or kill sensitive outdoor plants if left unprotected.

Residents are encouraged to cover or bring in tender vegetation before going to bed Monday night.

Temperatures are expected to warm quickly after sunrise Tuesday, with a gradual return to above-average conditions through the remainder of the week.
