Clayton Employee Receives North Carolina’s Highest Civilian Honor

CLAYTON, N.C. – Ann Game, Revenue and Utility Customer Service Director for the Town of Clayton, is the recipient of North Carolina’s highest civilian honor, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. The award recognizes her decades of dedication to public service and her lasting impact on the people of Clayton, Johnston County, and communities across the state.
Game received the award during the Clayton Town Council meeting on Monday, June 15. Presented on behalf of Governor Josh Stein, the recognition came as she prepares to retire after nearly 20 years with the Town and a professional journey that has touched countless lives.
“Looking back, what I’ll remember most are the people,” said Game. “I’ve had the privilege of working with incredible colleagues, both past and present, who taught me so much and made this journey truly special. I’m grateful for every opportunity I had to serve this community.”
Since joining Clayton in 2006, Game has helped shape one of the Town’s most important customer-facing departments. She has guided her team through years of changing technology and evolving customer expectations while making sure residents receive reliable, responsive support. Known for her high standards and willingness to help others, she has built a culture focused on professionalism, accountability, and care.

“Ann has always understood that local government is ultimately about people,” said Town Manager Rich Cappola. “What sets her apart is the way she invests in others. She has spent years helping employees grow, encouraging colleagues through challenges, and finding ways to make people feel valued. The impact of her career will continue long after her retirement because of the people she has influenced along the way.”
Before coming to Clayton, Game worked in economic development with Johnston County Government and held leadership positions in the staffing and workforce development industry. Along the way, she became known as a mentor and trusted leader who invested in the success of those around her.
Her commitment to helping others extends well beyond the workplace. Over the years, she has served as a Johnston Community College trustee, led local chamber of commerce organizations, supported transportation and economic development initiatives, mentored students, and volunteered with organizations such as Meals on Wheels and Second Chance Pet Adoptions. Through each role, she has worked to strengthen opportunities and improve quality of life throughout Johnston County.
The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is awarded by the Governor of North Carolina to individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to their communities and the state. Considered the state’s highest civilian honor, it recognizes people whose actions, leadership, and commitment to others have made a meaningful difference in the lives of North Carolinians. Recipients are selected for the lasting impact they leave on their communities and the example they set for future generations.
