Danger In The Skies: Laser Pointed At Life Flight Helicopter Near Johnston Airport
SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A potentially deadly act is under investigation after a laser was pointed at a medical helicopter during its landing approach in Johnston County — the third such incident reported in recent days.
The latest incident occurred around 1:00 a.m. Friday, April 17, as a Duke Life Flight helicopter was returning to its base at the Johnston County Regional Airport. According to authorities, the pilot reported a green laser beam striking the aircraft as it approached for landing.
The source of the laser was believed to be in the area of Swift Creek Road near Strickland Road.
After safely landing, the pilot contacted the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responded and canvassed the surrounding area, speaking with multiple residents, but were unable to locate a suspect or anyone in possession of a laser device.
While no injuries were reported, aviation officials stress that incidents like this pose a serious risk. A laser beam aimed at an aircraft — particularly during critical phases of flight like landing — can temporarily blind or disorient pilots, putting everyone on board at risk.
Federal law strictly prohibits aiming a laser at an aircraft. Under federal statute, offenders can face significant penalties, including fines of up to $250,000 and up to five years in prison. The Federal Aviation Administration may also impose civil penalties reaching tens of thousands of dollars per violation.
Authorities say this marks at least the third recent incident involving a laser pointed at the Duke Life Flight helicopter in the vicinity of the airport, raising growing concern among law enforcement and aviation officials.
The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation and is urging anyone with information to come forward. Tipsters can contact the sheriff’s office directly at 919-989-5000, and anonymous information is accepted.

This also happened to Carolina Air Care’s Tarheel 3 aircraft during the early morning hours of 4/5/26. Also a green laser and about 0.5-1 mile from the approach end of runway 21.
i was driving on 701 near newton grove round about. got me in the eye a few times driving. is definitely someone who needs to learn that it is deadly. and to do it to lifeline nonetheless is shamful
I live by the airport and went towards Clayton, I believe on the 17th, and my daughter and I both saw the beams in the sky and hitting tops of trees. On the way back home we noticed it was coming from a house on little creek church road having a party with a very large and very bright strobe/laser machine that was causing it. We could see it in tips of trees a few miles away.
