Police: Dog Rescued From Locked Truck In Downtown Smithfield, Owner Charged

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — First responders rescued a dog from a locked vehicle in downtown Smithfield on Wednesday after it was reportedly found in distress in the heat, according to the Smithfield Police Department.

A concerned citizen alerted authorities after spotting the dog inside a Ram pickup truck parked on South Second Street near the Johnston County Courthouse.

Officers arrived and found the truck’s windows rolled up with only a slight crack, and the dog showing signs of heat-related distress. Police said the animal also did not have access to water.

Firefighters with the Smithfield Fire Department were able to unlock the vehicle to gain access and remove the dog.

About 90 minutes later, officers located the man they said owned the dog. Authorities identified him as William Bryan Hill, 42, of Richardson Bass Road, Princeton. Hill reportedly told officers he had been at the courthouse and did not have anywhere to leave the dog.

Hill was charged with misdemeanor cruelty to animals and released on a $250 secured bond.

The dog was turned over to Johnston County Animal Services.

  1. Just like some people shouldn’t have kids, some people shouldn’t have pets. It called RESPONSIBILITY.

  2. Could have at LEAST put a bowl of water on the floor, opened the windows 3″ or so, and put up reflective window shades.

Dogs are much better than many of the people who own them.

  3. Yes, AGREED-all previous comments are correct! He should have just left the poor dog home… to tear up the couch,… wall board, ..etc! I am currently in this predicament. My little girl Beagle, is so spastic, when I have to go out. Not making excuses for Dude. But I have some sympathy for him in the respect that he may have thought he wouldn’t be long in courthouse. And his friend would be ecstatic to see him coming back to the truck! And on about their way they would go… Stuff happens, and life goes on. His friend is alive, and I hope he gets his dog back!! Yes sure, he might have been a TOTAL F up. Then, I will stand corrected!! But I truly know what it is like to have a “big time “SEPARATION ANXIETY DOG”, it’s bad…!

    • If one doesn’t have the proper facilities to care for a dog, it would be a good idea not to get one.

      • Exactly! Stupidity is alive and well on this man..He doesnt deserve a dog or this dog. Ty for helping this dog
