Report: Felony Charges Filed Against Man Who Defrauded $63 From Walmart

GARNER – A Smithfield man was arrested after he allegedly tried to defraud a local Walmart. Around 7:00pm Friday, August 4th, Johnston County deputies were summoned to Walmart at 5141 NC 42 West, Garner in the Cleveland community.

Loss prevention employees reported the suspect entered the business, removed several items from the shelf, then took the merchandise to the customer service desk and obtained a refund using an old receipt. The suspect was reportedly given $37.66 in cash and a $25.82 gift card, for a total of $63.48.

Deputies arrived and located the suspect, Jason Shawn Jenkins, age 52, of Yelverton Grove Road, Smithfield who was still inside the store. While being detained, deputies allegedly found a small amount of suspected methamphetamine and marijuana in his possession, along with drug paraphernalia.

Jenkins was charged with two felony and four misdemeanor offenses including felony obtaining property by false pretense and felony possession of methamphetamine. He was held under a $46,000 secured bond at the Johnston County Detention Center.
