NCDOT Approves Nearly $4 Million Resurfacing Bid For Johnston County

SMITHFIELD, N.C. – A better ride is coming to 15 miles of Johnston County roadways, thanks to a nearly $4 million resurfacing project recently awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation.

The work will include milling, repaving and restriping along these primary corridors:

  • N.C. 96 from U.S. 301 to Old Beulah Road
  • South Brightleaf Boulevard (U.S. 301) in Smithfield from Brogden Road to U.S. 70 Business
  • Wall Street (U.S. 301) in Benson from the Harnett County line to the Interstate 40 bridge

Additionally, these secondary routes will be resurfaced:

  • Cornwallis Road from Old Drug Store Road to East Justin Drive (3.6 miles)
  • Wilson’s Mills Road (almost 5 miles)
  • Banner Heights Road and Banner Lane

Raleigh-based Fred Smith Co. may begin work as soon as July 27 and will have until the end of next year to complete the project.

To minimize traffic disruptions, the contractor will not be allowed to close lanes on school days along routes such as N.C. 96 and Cornwallis Road, which serve nearby schools.
