BENSON – Dr. P.K. Vyas and Eastern Carolina Medical Center were honored Monday with “The Extra Mile Award” from the NC Department of Transportation. The Extra Mile Award is an internal NCDOT award to recognize significant contributions over and above normal job duties. The award can be given to an employee, a contractor, or a citizen.

An example of a situation deserving the Extra Mile Award is an employee, contractor, or citizen responding to an incident which saves the life of an employee or citizen.

Below is an excerpt of the application shared at the presentation awarding Dr. Vyas The Extra Mile Award:

“When COVID-19 vaccines first came out, NCDOT employees statewide were having a hard time finding and receiving vaccines. I asked Dr. Vyas, owner of Eastern Carolina Medical Center in Benson, if he could assist us in getting Division 4 employees vaccinated if we held a drive through event at our division office. Dr. Vyas agreed and we had a successful event. As the news spread of this generous offer other divisions asked if he could assist them. I again spoke to Dr. Vyas, and he agreed to send his staff statewide to ensure all NCDOT employees that wished to be vaccinated had that opportunity. Dr. Vyas also assisted NCDOT in testing employees statewide for COVID-19 on a weekly basis. Dr. Vyas was humble, caring, accommodating, and adaptable to our needs, as well as reliable and dependable once we set schedules. He was a calming presence in a stressful time, and he helped us accomplish our objective statewide, to care for our staff.”

  1. Yes totally. I thought doctors jobs was to save people. I can’t believe it! I mean how could he?!? That’s why the lines are so long! Bc everyone’s dead. Wait…. No… they’re all alive, but the 100s of thousands that didn’t are dead. Educate yourself. Even our fearless leader Donald J Trump took it!

    • I can’t believe how many lives that Dr. Vyas has saved over the last 30 years. I just looked him up and can’t believe how much he has contributed to the communities that he has served. This doctor is not profit driven like most are across the nation. He has purchased and donated ambulances to emergency services when the towns were in need, donated millions of dollars to a local university system to expand and help in advancing the School of Osteopathic Medicine’s efforts to meet the health care needs of North Carolinians, and also donated and funded community parks in more than one small town. I sure can’t find any clinical data that supports any notion that he has contributed to any loss of lives. I think I need to make an appointment at his clinic because based off what I researched he definitely will make sure all my health needs are addressed.

  2. I respect the right that we all have a right to express our opinions. I do not like the fact that you are quick to judge some one you evidently do not know. I have known Dr. Vyas since he came to Benson. I had the pleasure of working with him in several different facilities. He was always the doctor that answered my call when I needed help with a patient. He came many times when l called him about a patient that was dying. Sometimes he came if it was not his patient. I am a retired nurse that had the pleasure of working with him. He is the best doctor I ever worked with. If he is supporting a medicine, it is because he believes that it will help you. That doesn’t mean you have to take it. That is your choice.he is my family doctor and I thank God for him everyday.
