Public Library Kicks Off Summer Reading Season

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — The Public Library of Johnston County & Smithfield will launch its 2026 Summer Reading Program on Monday, June 1.

This year’s theme, “Unearth a Story,” celebrates curiosity, discovery and the thrill of finding something new, all while encouraging the joy of reading.

As in the past, the library will be offering families in the community the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP). CSLP is a consortium of state libraries and public library systems working together to provide high-quality summer reading program materials for children, teens, adults and families.

This year’s programs will include:

  • A reading/activity log that readers use at home to track their progress toward an age-appropriate reading goal, earning incentives and prizes for participation.
  • Activities and events happening at the library or available as take-home kits in support of the theme. These include storytimes, active play/music/movement activities, crafts, book clubs, special presenters, movies, game nights and more.

All programs and activities will take place at the Public Library of Johnston County & Smithfield at 305 East Market Street in downtown Smithfield. Library activities are free and offered to children, teens and adults.

Visit the library’s summer reading webpage to explore events, get details about reading challenges and prizes, and access printable calendars.
