Truck Wheels May Have Sparked Grass Fire On Interstate

Dual wheels off a tractor trailer may have sparked a grass fire this afternoon (Tuesday) on Interstate 95 in Johnston County.   The Smithfield Fire Department responded to the 93 mile marker near the Brogden Road exit shortly after 12 Noon after motorists reportedly a nearly 200 yard section of grass in the median was on fire.

The fire originated around a set of dual wheels against the median guardrail. The wheels appeared to have come off a tractor trailer traveling southbound. The truck did not stop.

Firemen quickly extinguished the grass fire.  Southbound traffic was reduced to one lane while crews contained the fire.
