Two Juveniles Charged In Fatal Shooting Of Smithfield Man
GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Two juveniles have been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a Smithfield man earlier this month in Goldsboro.
According to the Goldsboro Police Department, officers responded around 8:38 p.m. on May 7 to the 100 block of Vanderbilt Circle following a ShotSpotter alert indicating possible gunfire in the area.
While officers were en route, additional information was received indicating someone had been shot.
When officers arrived, they found Edward Duncan Jr., 42, suffering from a gunshot wound. Duncan was transported to UNC Health Wayne, where he later died from his injuries.
Investigators later identified a 16-year-old and a 12-year-old, both from Goldsboro, as suspects.
During the investigation, detectives received information the 16-year-old suspect was attending classes at Goldsboro High School. Officers responded to the school to locate him, prompting a temporary lockdown out of an abundance of caution.
Investigators later determined the suspect had left school before officers arrived. Once authorities confirmed there was no threat to students or staff, the lockdown was lifted.
The 16 year-old was later taken into custody without further incident and was being held pending his first court appearance.
Police said the 12-year-old suspect was located at a residence in Goldsboro and taken into custody without incident.
The 12 year-old was charged with murder, larceny of a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm before being transported to a juvenile detention facility.
The investigation remains ongoing.
