Wayne County Commissioner Wayne Aycock Dies; Flags Lowered To Half-Staff

GOLDSBORO – Wayne County officials announced Tuesday the passing of longtime County Commissioner George Wayne Aycock Jr., a public servant whose decades of community involvement made him a well-known figure across the county. Aycock, who had served as the county’s at-large commissioner since 2012, died over the weekend, county leaders said.
Aycock’s service to Wayne County stretched far beyond his work on the board. He spent more than 60 years with the Nahunta Fire Department and previously served on the Wayne County Planning Board and the Northwestern Sanitary Water District. He was also an active member of Pikes Crossroad Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Aycock was a businessman as well, owning Nahunta Storage and formerly operating Wayne Aycock Trucking.
“Today we lost a true leader in Commissioner Wayne Aycock,” Board Chairwoman Barbara Aycock said in a statement. “He was a true leader and a friend to all. He loved Wayne County. On behalf of the Board of Commissioners and the staff of Wayne County, we offer our condolences to Commissioner Aycock’s family.”
In his honor, flags at all county facilities will fly at half-staff. County officials asked the public to keep the Aycock family in their thoughts and to respect their privacy during this time of grief.
