Wilson County Culvert Replacement To Detour Traffic Near Three Schools

STANTONSBURG – Motorists traveling near the Wilson-Wayne county line will face a detour beginning Monday as N.C. Department of Transportation crews replace an aging drainage pipe beneath Pelt Road.

The closure is scheduled to begin around 8 a.m. Aug. 24 and could remain in place for up to two weeks, weather permitting.

NCDOT said the existing corrugated metal pipe beneath the roadway is deteriorating and nearing the end of its service life.

State and contract crews will remove the pipe and install a larger aluminum box culvert designed to improve water flow. The roadway will then be repaved.

The closure comes as students return to school and will affect buses and other traffic serving three nearby schools.

A marked detour will direct motorists along N.C. 111/222, Red Hill Road and St. James Church Road.

NCDOT said materials for the project arrived late last week, allowing the department to coordinate work schedules with contractors.

Drivers should expect longer travel times and use caution near the work zone.
