Coronavirus Outbreak Reported At Johnston Correctional Institute
51 Cases Linked To Springbrook Nursing Center 

SMITHFIELD – The Johnston County Health Department reported an outbreak today of six cases of COVID-19 associated with Johnston Correctional Institute located in Smithfield.  Three inmates and three staff members have been confirmed positive.  A COVID-19 outbreak in a congregate setting is defined as two or more laboratory confirmed cases.

The Johnston County Public Health Department has provided the following information as of 4:00 p.m. today:

  • 33 current and/or former residents (includes 6 deaths)
  • 11 staff reside in Johnston County
  • 7 staff reside in other counties
