Boil Water Advisory In Effect For Town Of Smithfield Water Customers
SMITHFIELD, N.C. — The Town of Smithfield has issued a precautionary boil water advisory for water customers who may have experienced low water pressure or temporary water outages after a contractor accidentally damaged a fire hydrant, affecting the town’s water distribution system.
The damaged fire hydrant is located near Massey Street and Futrell Way. While the precautionary boil water advisory has been issued town-wide, any potential impacts would likely be limited to customers in that area because of the location of the incident.
Town officials said periods of low or no water pressure can increase the risk of bacteria entering the water distribution system. Although there is no indication the water is contaminated, customers in affected areas are being advised to boil all water used for human consumption until further notice.
The advisory applies to water used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation. Water should be brought to a vigorous boil for at least one minute before use. Bottled water may also be used.
The Town is also asking customers to conserve water whenever possible while crews continue responding to the incident and work to restore normal system operations.
The precautionary advisory will remain in effect until water quality testing confirms the system is safe. Once testing is complete, the Town will issue an official notice lifting the advisory.
Residents with questions may contact the Town of Smithfield Water Treatment Plant at (919) 934-2661.
