Clayton Police Teen Academy Offers Hands-On Learning Experiences

CLAYTON, NC – The Clayton Police Department is now accepting applications for its 2026 Teen Academy, an annual hands-on program designed to teach young people about law enforcement while building leadership skills and community connections.

New for this year, the academy is expanding from three days to four, giving participants more time for experiential learning and new training opportunities such as self-defense and real-world scenario exercises.

“We pay close attention to what students tell us after they graduate from the program,” said Lieutenant Jeff Young, co-organizer of the 2026 Teen Academy. “They’re eager to jump into the practical side of policing – solving problems, working as a team, and thinking through real situations. This year’s academy gives them more opportunities to do exactly that.”

This year, students can choose between two sessions:

  • Session One: Monday, June 15 – Thursday, June 18
  • Session Two: Monday, July 27 – Thursday, July 30

Each session runs from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Clayton Police Department (315 E. Second Street). The program includes classroom discussions, interactive activities, field trips, and role-playing exercises covering topics like law, behavioral science, drug prevention, and life skills.

“Our goal is for teens to walk away with confidence and a better understanding of the people behind the badge,” said Young. “When they see how much teamwork, communication, and care go into serving a community, it helps build trust and respect on both sides.”

To apply, students must be between 13 and 19 years old and submit a completed application, along with a one- to two-minute video explaining why they want to attend. Videos can be recorded in portrait (vertical) or landscape (horizontal) orientation, and MP4 format is recommended. Videos should be emailed to lkeating-lopez@townofclaytonnc.org.

The deadline to apply is 5 p.m., Friday, May 22. Applications will be reviewed upon arrival, and selected applicants will be notified shortly after the deadline. Those accepted must submit a signed and notarized waiver from a parent or guardian before attending.
