SMITHFIELD – The Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department has received approval to move forward with additional renovations to the Hastings House.

The Town Council, at their July 1 meeting, unanimously approved a $218,480 bid from Ledford Contracting Group Inc.

The town had previously approved $43,647 in architect fees and project administration for the construction work.

The project includes masonry, wood finishing, framing, heat and moisture protection, window repairs, storm windows, electrical and exterior improvements.

The renovation is being funded through a 2022 Emergency Supplemental Historic Preservation Fund grant.

The Hastings House was built on Second Street in 1854 and used by Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston and General Braxton Bragg during the Civil War. The historic property, now located on Front Street, is the current home of the Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation.

  1. This house is racist. You know because civil war generals used it. So we must tear it down just like all of the statues that were removed.

  2. Your increased property taxes going to all the town’s pet project. How bout stop approving all the extra spending and give property owners their money back.
