Johnston County Under Heat Advisory; Severe Storm Threat
Heat index values could reach 105 degrees Friday as forecasters also warn of a risk for severe thunderstorms later in the day.

JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — Residents across Johnston County are being urged to take precautions today as the National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for much of central and eastern North Carolina.
The advisory will be in effect from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, with heat index values expected to reach as high as 105 degrees.
According to the National Weather Service, the combination of hot temperatures and high humidity could increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for people working outdoors, older adults, young children and those without access to air conditioning.
Forecasters recommend drinking plenty of fluids, limiting strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, staying in air-conditioned environments when possible and checking on relatives and neighbors who may be vulnerable to the heat.
Anyone working outdoors should take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Heat stroke is a medical emergency, and anyone showing signs of heat-related illness should be moved to a cool location and seek medical assistance immediately.

In addition to the heat, forecasters are monitoring the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms Friday afternoon and evening. Johnston County is included in an area facing a slight risk of severe weather, with damaging wind gusts posing the primary threat.
The National Weather Service also noted a marginal risk of excessive rainfall Friday. While drought conditions continue across parts of the region, localized flooding remains possible if heavy rain develops and persists over the same area.
Residents are encouraged to stay weather aware throughout the day and monitor forecasts for updates on both the heat and potential severe weather threats.
