DUNN – An unidentified man was struck and killed by a freight train in Dunn on Sunday morning.

“On April 2, 2023, at approximately 12:10 a.m., the Dunn Police Department responded to the area of Pearsall St. at the railroad tracks in reference to a bicyclist who had been struck by a train,” said Chief Cary A. Jackson of Dunn Police Department. “The train was a CSX cargo train traveling north at the time of the collision. Investigators with CSX and the Dunn Police Department responded to the scene to collect evidence. A medical examiner was also contacted and responded to the scene. The identity of the victim has not been confirmed at the time.”
First personnel on the scene reported finding a crushed bicycle under the train as well as human remains near the Divine Street crossing.
The train was traveling northbound on the main track through town when the conductor observed the train strike a person. The personnel on the train immediately brought the train to an emergency stop and notified dispatchers with CSX of the incident.
CSX notified the Harnett County Communications Center.
It took the train over 4,000 feet to come to a stop with the locomotive being located just past Granville Street.
Trooper Burton of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol Troop B District 8 was dispatched to the scene to assist with forensic investigation.
