SELMA – The N.C. Department of Transportation is seeking public input on a proposal to permanently close East Preston Street to vehicular traffic at its railroad crossing in Selma.

The NCDOT’s Rail Division will hold an open house about the proposed change from 5-7 p.m. Feb. 28 in Selma Town Hall’s Council Chambers on 110 E. Anderson Street.

The town of Selma and the Bailey Feed Mill have asked the NCDOT Rail Division to consider closing this crossing. The mill has expanded in recent years, increasing rail and commercial truck traffic to this site. Closing Preston Street would address traffic and safety concerns at this busy crossing.

As part of the proposal, NCDOT would close the road and install guardrail on either side of the CSX railroad, as well as create a dead end and new turnaround area to the south of the tracks. The safety improvements would be constructed in 2025 at a projected cost of $570,000.

The public comment deadline is March 13. People with questions or comments about this project should contact NCDOT Rail Division Project Engineer Conzuela Cogdell at 919-707-4123; cbcogdell@ncdot.gov; or 1556 Mail Service Center in Raleigh.

Alternatively, people may contact the project team via email at prestonst-closure@PublicInput.com; or by calling 601-300-5186 and entering project code 5251 to leave a voice mail.

  1. Road near your property too busy with through traffic? Close it! All that traffic can just pile up at the bottlenecks where they belong. This is a done deal, of course.

    • You’re right, this is a done deal. Public comment doesn’t mean squat. The same thing happened in Clayton after we were told it wouldn’t.

  2. $570,000 to install 2 guard rails (to block the crossing) and pave a cul-de-sac?!?!? Are you kidding me?!?!? And this is “planned” for 2025?!?!? Who is bidding this project?!?!

  3. Just did an aerial view of it and it looks like eight tracks going through there. It definitely needs to be done, just seems a price too steep.
