Smithfield Holds Swearing-In Ceremony

SMITHFIELD – The Smithfield Town Council convened Tuesday evening for a ceremonial meeting marked by the swearing-in of the mayor and four council members, as well as a special recognition for outgoing Councilman David Barbour.

Mayor M. Andy Moore, who won reelection in November, was the first to take the Oath of Office. The oath was administered by Honorable Michelle Ball, Clerk of Superior Court, officially beginning Moore’s next term leading the town.

Four council members followed in succession:

Dr. Gettys Cohen, Jr., newly elected to the council, was sworn in by Honorable Michael R. Morgan, retired Senior Associate Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court.

Returning Councilman Sloan Stevens took his oath from Clerk of Superior Court Michelle Ball.

Returning Councilman Travis Scott was sworn in by Honorable Joy Jones, District Court Judge.

Doris Louise Wallace, newly elected to the council, received her oath from Honorable Addie Rawls, retired District Court Judge.

After all oaths were administered, the newly seated council selected Sloan Stevens to serve as Mayor Pro Tem for the upcoming term.

Recognition of Outgoing Councilman David Barbour

The mayor and town council honor outgoing Councilman David Barbour, who did not win reelection. Barbour was recognized for his service and dedication, and contributions to town projects during his tenure.

Council members and Mayor Moore offered words of appreciation, thanking him for his commitment to the Smithfield community.
