Thompson Files For Reelection

CLAYTON – Incumbent Councilman and Mayor Pro-Tem Jason Thompson has filed for reelection to the Clayton Town Council. Thompson was first elected in 2011 and is completing his third term. Thompson serves as the council liaison on the Fire Department Advisory Board and as the town’s delegate to the Triangle J Council of Governments.
Thompson, a fierce advocate for senior citizens, has previously served as Chairperson of the Triangle J Area Agency on Aging. Thompson says though he has accomplished a lot as a council member, he still has much more work to do helping lead the fastest growing town in the fastest growing county in North Carolina.
“We have an immediate need for two additional fire stations and police substations and I believe I am uniquely qualified to see these projects to completion.” Thompson says his greatest achievements as a council member have been implementation of the parks and recreation bond, and initiating and advocating for the implementation of EMT level first response to medical emergencies by Clayton Fire Department.
“Numerous lives have been saved and/or their quality of life improved by our EMT first response. EMS is often strained for resources, and we have EMT’s on scene sometimes 10 minutes or more before an ambulance arrives. During my time on the council we opened our greenway system, connected with the Mountains to Sea Trail, opened our first dog park, and completely renovated Municipal Park.”
Thompson is especially proud of the creation of the Parks Police division within Clayton Police. “Not only have we provided wonderful recreation facilities, we placed our officers there to keep our citizens safe while using them.”
Thompson says managing growth and necessary infrastructure improvements is the greatest challenge for current and future councils.
Outside of politics, Thompson is a retired paramedic having served the citizens of Clayton and Johnston County for thirty years. He currently serves in an appointed capacity as medical examiner for Johnston, Harnett and Franklin counties. He believes his healthcare background prepared him to serve all citizens.
“I have been in homes in every neighborhood in our town. I have witnessed first-hand the citizens having to choose between paying the light bill and paying for their medication. I will always be their advocate!”
