Three Wayne County Schools To Have New Principals In The New Year

GOLDSBORO – Three WCPS schools will have new principals in the new year. The Wayne County Board of Education approved two principal changes during a Special Called Meeting.

Winter Goodson

Carver Heights Elementary assistant principal, Winter Goodson, will be the new principal at Carver Heights Elementary. She is replacing Dr. Patrice Faison who is resigning at the end of December. Mrs. Goodson has over 16 years of public education experience, with more than four years of cumulative experience serving as an assistant principal and instructional coach at Carver Heights Elementary. Prior to joining Carver Heights Elementary in 2016, she served as curriculum facilitator/interventionist at School Street Elementary and taught physical education at North Drive Elementary. Mrs. Goodson holds a bachelor’s degree in sports management, a Masters of Education degree, is national board certified, and is certified in school administration.

Karla Smith

Meadow Lane assistant principal, Karla Smith, will be the new principal of Carver Elementary. Mrs. Smith is replacing Antoinette Ward, who was recently named the new principal of Meadow Lane Elementary. Mrs. Smith has over 26 years of public education experience, with more than a decade of cumulative experience serving as an assistant principal at Meadow Lane Elementary and Brogden Primary. Prior to entering school administration she taught at Northeast Elementary and Rosewood Elementary. Mrs. Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, a master’s degree in elementary education, and is certified in both Academically or Intellectually Gifted (AIG) teaching and school administration.

A third principal change will occur at Brogden Primary through an administrative transfer.

Na-Tale Nelson

Mount Olive Middle principal, Na-Tale Nelson, will be transferring to Brogden Primary as principal. She will be replacing Nicole Barrett who is resigning at the end of December. Mrs. Nelson has over 21 years of public education experience, with a decade spent serving as principal, interim principal, and assistant principal at Mount Olive Middle. Prior to entering school administration, Mrs. Nelson taught at Carver Heights Elementary and Carver Elementary. Mrs. Nelson holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in school administration.

“The district leadership will be working with and supporting these three school administrators throughout this mid-year transition to ensure a smooth change in leadership for students, staff and families,” states Dr. Merrill, interim superintendent.

The following administrative and director changes were also approved by the Board of Education: Eastern Wayne Middle instructional coach, Teressa Hollar-Watson, will be the new assistant principal at Eastern Wayne Elementary; Goldsboro High assistant principal, Maya Swinson, will be the new assistant principal at Tommy’s Road Elementary; and WCPS Electrician, Dean Bridgers, will be the new director of maintenance.

All of the changes will take effect January 1, 2021. A new principal at Mount Olive Middle has not been named.
