
SMITHFIELD – A high-speed chase that started in Princeton ended on Interstate 95 near Smithfield.
At 3:14pm Thursday, a Johnston County deputy was on patrol on US 70 near Princeton using his radar. The officer observed a Hyundai traveling at 77 mph in a 55 mph zone and attempted a traffic stop. Instead, the driver accelerated to speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour while traveling westbound on US 70.
The chase turned onto I-95 South, exited onto US 70 Business exit ramp in Smithfeld, north on Outlet Center Drive to Selma, then southbound a second time on I-95.

Another deputy was able to deploy stop sticks on I-95 near the 94-mile marker, between US 70 and Brogden Road. The suspect’s vehicle struck the stop sticks and traveled off the interstate to the right.
The driver attempted to flee on foot and during a struggle with the law enforcement, was tased before being handcuffed.
Officers said they located a Glock handgun, two cell phones, cash, 53 grams of suspected marijuana, and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle.

Mazaye Anthony James, age 19, of Raleigh was charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest, possession with intent to sell or deliver a controlled substance, speeding, reckless driving wanton disregard, resisting a public officer, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
James was held under a $800,000 secured bond.
The vehicle was seized.
