Highway Patrol Arrests Suspect In Fatal Hit And Run Accident

SMITHFIELD – The State Highway Patrol has arrested a Smithfield man in connection with a deadly hit and run accident earlier this month.

Sampson Eugene Neumann, age 45, of the 9500 block of Brogden Road, Smithfield was arrested May 21 by state troopers and charged with felony hit and run causing serious injury or death.

The Highway Patrol alleges Neumann was traveling on Braswell Road, east of Smithfield, around 10:47pm May 11 when he struck a bicyclist from behind. The bicyclist, Christopher Wayne Aycock, 53, was ejected and died at the scene.

According to an eyewitness the SUV never stopped. Based on information from the witness, and vehicle parts left at the scene, troopers determined the hit and run vehicle was a dark blue metallic 2011-2013 Kia Sorrento.

Troopers received a tip that led them to Neumann’s home in the Brogden community. He was arrested Sunday at home. The hit and run vehicle was located and seized. Authorities said it had damage to the front consistent with the fatal collision.

The Highway Patrol said Neumann lived about 5 minutes away from the location of the fatal May 11 accident.

A bondsman posted Neumann’s $50,000 secured bond. He is currently free from custody pending his next court appearance.

  1. Still think “open borders” are the real problem? Instead of using federal funds for local enforcement, they’ve tricked all the sheeple into paying $14B for about 18 miles of The Wall. #VoteOutIncumbents

    • @Tell the truth- then”real” problem is the lack of love, morality and ethical behavior.

      • @JoCoProud: The guy hit and killed a cyclist, and then went home like nothing happened. No love, ethics, or morals anywhere to be seen! But keep telling thr sheeple that immigration is the problem!

  2. Sampson Eugene Neumann is a wimp! Hit and run and then hid like a coward. And some Judge lets him out for $50,000. He should have stayed at the scene since it was an accident. Put him away for a long, long time!

    • And that makes it lesser of a crime? They should make selfishness and ignorance a felony too and maybe a bunch of others would be locked up.

  3. A victim’s criminal record in this case makes it no less of a crime ….. this wasn’t a robbery gone wrong or a crime ending in a fatality…. So to those thinking a man’s criminal record makes him less of a hit and run victim or his family less effected bc of his criminal history r rather unintelligent at the least …

  4. I knew the victim. He had a family that loved him. His criminal record has no relevance in this case, and the P.O.S. that hit him should never have been allowed to walk free. Truly an injustice. KARMA will always prevail and Neumann should rot in a jail cell for the rest of his life.
