Pair Caught Stealing Construction Material, Police Say

SMITHFIELD – Two people have been arrested for allegedly stealing construction materials from a job site. On April 19th around 8:00pm, Smithfield officers responded to a suspicious vehicle call on Spirea Drive.

Officers allege Sergio Urieta Carazin, 33, and Lourdes Gutirrez Velazquez, 30, both of Sadora Court, Raleigh, had stolen 12 rolls of roofing underlayment. They were caught by police before they could leave the scene.

Carazin and Velazquez were charged with possession of stolen property from a construction site and given $5,000 bonds.

They are also under investigation for the theft of roofing materials from a new construction home site in the 8600 block of NC Highway 96 North, reported the same day. Items taken from that location was reportedly recovered by Smithfield Police during their arrest.

On his arrest report, Carazin was listed as a construction worker.
